Travel Tips this Lent

Whether you're travelling to enjoy the break or travelling to reflect upon the sacrifices of our Lord and Savior this Lenten holiday, here are a few very important tips that you should keep in mind:

a) Watch your Children: Whether you are off on a break or out to pray, the chances are very high that your kids are not. As the Buggs Bunny cartoon goes "No more classes! No more Books! No more Teacher's dirty looks!" Your kids are fresh out of school and bent on enjoying their well earned freedom. So even if you do need a break yourself, it is paramount that you keep an eye on them to keep them from getting into trouble, injury, or worse. Let's build spiritual relationships this season and not spend the time treating injuries or looking for lost children.

b) Be mindful of the here and now: There is a tendency for travelers to zone out and find themselves lost in their mobile devices, books, cameras or moments. And there's nothing wrong with that as Holy Week can be a time to recharge batteries. Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas himself said that there is nothing wrong with being happy this Holy Week. However do realize that while travelling you need to keep your wits about you or end up becoming the victims of those with less than pure intentions. So be mindful of where you are and who is around you. You also need to keep your wits around you while driving - regardless as to how beautiful the scenery may be or how demanding your phone may be.

c) Don't make yourself a target: Speaking of being mindful of your surroundings to keep thieves and ill wishers away, you might want to make yourself less of a target by not going around looking like you loaded all your riches in your backpack. There's no need to be flashy when you're on holiday and, in fact it might be a good idea to separate yourself from technology while you're on holiday. Reconnect with nature and with God. Find yourself without the help of Google.

4) Keep the following numbers handy: Aside from 911, it might be a good idea to keep note of these numbers in the event of an emergency - courtesy of the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines.
