Frederick Stanley started Stanley Works in a small shop in New Britain, Connecticut in 1843 where he produced bolts, hinges and other high quality hardware made from wrought Iron. Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker founded the Black & Decker Corporation in 1910. 6 years later Black & Decker held the world’s first patent for a portable power-tool - a hand-held drill combining a pistol grip and trigger switch.
Over the next few decades both companies acquired or developed an un-paralled family of iconic brands and trusted products, and, finally, the two companies merged on March 12, 2010 becoming Stanley Black & Decker. The merger meant that the two companies were joining forces to bring together the best-of-the-best and to offer practical, meaningful product and services that made life easier – empowering people to do better, safer, more significant work.
